The West Portsmouth Youth Basketball Association is a Non-Profit 501(c)3 Organization formed in 2007 to financially and athletically support the community of West Portsmouth and Scioto County. Originally designed to help increase skills, the organization has worked to develop a facility for children to play basketball in a safe environment year round and to develop relationships with mentors that resulted in traveling and competing in basketball tournaments around the region.
In 2007 Bobby Evans, donated the football complex including the stadium, field house and practice field to our association. This gave us the opportunity to increase outreach and positive development to our community to include Pee Wee Football as well as basketball. The following year, with the support of local businesses and a donation from The Maycel Clark Family, we were able to purchase the remainder of the complex, including the building and surrounding property. We now have a facility for the community to play basketball all year round. Our goal had been achieved!
Now that we have achieved this goal, we continually need support from the community to maintain it. With approximately $8,000 in bills per month, this is not a cheap investment. A FY14 grant from the Scioto County Commissioners helped us with maintenance of the facility. We have applied again for FY15 with hopes of completing renovations that will allow us to welcome indoor soccer to the Complex. We have recently expanded by renting the education wing of the building for business’ to open and help generate revenue that will support our complex. We are home to The Shirt Shop, Rhythm’n Rhinestones Dance Studio, DejaVu Consignment, This That & Then Some, Classy & Sassy Boutique, McGraw Jewelry & More, Yellow Jacket Graphics and Gifts, GutterPro, and Dottie’s Sewing & Alterations. With room’s available and interested business men and women, we are looking forward to growing and opening even more shops in the future!
In the past year we have hosted a summer basketball league with 40 teams and over 300 kids participating. We have also been home to West youth football with over 250 kids participating in the eight week long season. Following that was the annual Sider Bowl football tournament with participating teams from as far away as Huntington, WV. In 2014 we kicked off our West Portsmouth basketball season with the annual Turkey Bowl basketball tournament. Over 30 teams participated this year. The Complex hosted the West youth basketball season for eight weeks with over 240 kids participating. Our facility has continued to be a host sight for the New Boston/SOMC Basketball League on Saturday evenings and Sunday’s throughout the winter, with over 50 teams involved. Christmas break 2014 brought a very successful annual Holiday Basketball Tournament for boys and girls basketball with 34 teams in participation and coming as far as North Adams to play. We finished up the season hosting many all-star basketball tournaments in February with 28 boy teams and 18 girl teams participating.
The 2014 year began numerous new endeavors for The Complex! We joined with Shawnee State University and their Sports Management program to be a student internship site. In November, we started hosting weekly Bingo games on Thursday night at 6pm. The proceeds from this benefit the Complex and many booster clubs at Portsmouth West High School. We are looking forward to expanding our programs even more in 2015 with your help!
Our intention is to use the West Portsmouth Youth Sports Complex for any activity that benefits our youth and our community. To be successful, we need the support of our community. We hope you’ll join us in our efforts.
